Public Private Partnership for Modernizing Infrastructure Policies
The current
situation of roads and bridges in America showcases many serious infrastructure
problems that need to be addressed at the earliest. The government authorities
do not have sufficient resources to finance infrastructure projects. The
private sector therefore, needs to play a critical role in filling this huge
gap between fund generation and execution of infrastructure plans.
At this juncture,
when governments are not able to raise sufficient funds, America’s
infrastructure policies need complete makeover. They need to be modernized by
various ways, one of which is through the acceptance of infrastructure capital
from private bridge infrastructure companies for initiating long-pending
infrastructure projects. There are many bridge infrastructure companies in the
US that got these projects rolling and completed them on time, quite
efficiently. The South Norfolk Jordan Bridge in Chesapeake is one such example.
The bridge connects Portsmouth and Chesapeake and has won the Overall 2018 Gold
Award by Coastal Virginia Magazine. The bridge was earlier in a bad state like
others, but was taken over by a private bridge infrastructure company for its
construction and operations work. The route was restored without costing
anything to the City of Chesapeake, till the time it got opened. It provides
direct access to commercial areas too, without any weight restrictions.
With timely
completion of such projects, not only the infrastructure needs will be met,
even the developmental milestones will be set and achieved in the region. The
construction of new Cline Avenue Bridge to reconnect Hammond with Chicago, is
expected to open new avenues for destination development and economic growth in
both the regions.
Considering many
such examples, more and more public private partnerships should be allowed to
work on these bridge infrastructure projects. Bridge infrastructure companies
offer a promising resource to carry on such projects and thereby can lead to
modernization of infrastructure policies, the prerequisite for settling
infrastructure crisis.
